Pommard: A Jewel of Burgundy
Posted by Armand Heitz onPommard, this small Burgundy village nestled between Beaune and Volnay, is a name that resonates strongly in the world of wine. Renowned for its powerful and refined red wines, the Pommard appellation embodies excellence and Burgundian winemaking know-how. But beyond the clichés, Pommard is a multifaceted terroir, rich in history and character.
The Appellations of Pommard
Pommard is exclusively dedicated to the production of red wines, made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The specifications leave little flexibility at this level, to my great despair. The appellation is divided into two main categories: the village appellations and the Premiers Crus. Among the Premiers Crus, some names stand out for their fame and finesse: Les Rugiens , Les Épenots, Les Fremiers and Les Chaponnières. These crus, each with its own identity, reflect the diversity of the soils and microclimates of Pommard.
In the heart of Pommard, there are more confidential plots, such as Clos des Poutures, a monopoly that I am lucky to own. This Premier Cru surprises with its elegance and finesse, breaking with the sometimes rustic image of traditional Pommards. Clos des Poutures reveals a unique, subtle and delicate personality, the fruit of a terroir that I strive to respect and sublimate. It is one of my favorite wines, because it perfectly embodies my philosophy: revealing the true nature of the terroir without seeking to transform it.
The Specificities of the Pommard Terroir
What makes Pommard wines unique is, above all, their terroir. Located on clay-limestone soils, sometimes enriched with iron, the vineyard benefits from ideal exposure to the sun. This unique terroir gives Pommard wines their robust, structured character and their ability to age for a long time. Pommard wines are known for their intense color, their aromas of black fruits, and their spicy notes that develop over time.
Anecdote about the Village of Pommard
Pommard is also a village full of history. Did you know that Pommard is one of the rare villages to have such an evocative name, inspired by the Gallic god Pomona, protector of orchards and gardens? An anecdote that says a lot about the inhabitants' attachment to the land and its fruits.
